Basketball

Wolverine PE

When we teach basketball we have 6 hoops that all raise and lower. I tend to keep some down and some up so that kids can kind of pick their hoop based on their comfort level. These games work with classes with 18 - 50 kids. All of these are adaptable with kids from K-6th grade and up I am sure.

Dribble Shoot Score

Equipment: A basketball for every team. (3-5 kids) I can have one to two teams per basket. I have 6 baskets so I can do from 6-12 teams.

Play: Each team starts at designated spots. First player dribbles toward the basket and shoots from wherever they want. (Lay up, or Jumper). If a basket is made the team yells "one" and the ball is passed to the next teammate who dribbles and shoots. If made the team yells"two". Start by playing to 5. I like to rotate hoops after every game and I try to have the hoops at varied heights. The team that wins needs 7 to win the next round, then varying levels of difficulties after that.

Flag Tag Basketball -
Divide the class into 8-12 teams. 2-3 players per team. Locate the groups around the perimiter of the playing area (inside or outside). Each team needs a basketball, and a pile of 6 flags (flag football) or so. We choose not to use the belts and tuck the flags into the top of the pants instead.

To play the game, each team sends out the first player in line. You must dribble the ball into the space, and try to steal the flag from another player and get back to your "base" without losing your flag. You are out and have to go to the end of your line if:
1. Your flag gets stolen
2. You lose control of the ball, and have to stop the dribble
3. You step out of the playing area.

We do not have a ton of flags so we monitor and take flags from the groups who have a bunch and give some to groups who are running out so that we can keep plyaing.

Fire Brigade - 1 team per basket. The teams line up under their basket. In the center of the room there is a hula hoop with a ball for each team. There is a hula hoop with 5 bean bags (buckets of water) for each teamunder the basket where they start.
Each player has a foot inside the hoop under the basket. On the signal go, the team has to run to the center of the room and each player has to put a foot into the center hoop, one player picks up the ball and the rest of the team spreads out toward the basket they will shoot at. The ball gets passed to each player on the team until it gets to the shooter. The shooter takes a shot, if it is made then the team gets a bean bag from under the basket and places it in the hula hoop in the center of the room, and then goes back and tries again. If the shooter misses the team must try again. Each time your team tries there needs to be a new shooter. When your team gets 5 bags in the hoop you need to run to the center of the room each put a foot in the hoop and yell "Fire's Out". If you win you would need 6 buckets of water to win the nextgame, etc.

Tic Tac Shoot - Two teams at each basket, with a basketball, tic tac toe board and 5 same colored bean bags each (1 team red, 1 team blue). Line up the teams at a pre-determined spot on the floor ( free throw line). On the signal go the first player on each team dribbles to the basket and shoots if they make it they collect the ball hand it off ot the next player and place a bean bag on the board. If a player misses they just gather the ball and give it to the next player then get back in line. Play until one team wins tic tac toe. Shake hands and repeat. You can switch teams to mix it up a bit.

Blackout - Similar to Dribble Shoot Score, but each team is at it own basket, with a ball and 9 bean bags, and a tic tac toe board. On the signal go,  the first person dribbles or shoots,  if they make it they get to put a bean bag down on the board, if they miss they just get the ball to the next shooter. When a team "blacks out" the board they yell blackout and win. IF you are playing again, make the team that won not count their first two makes, then they would have to make 11 shots to win.

Frog Basketball/ Basketball lottery - For this game you will need a bunch of poly-spots or foor markers. Different colors work best. Lay a bunch in front of each of the end baskets. Line up the teams, half on one end and half on the other. The first person from each team will dribble to the other end of the gym and then shoot from one of the spots. If you make the shot you keep the spot and take it back to your team, if you miss you just get the ball and get back to your team. If you make a shot but forget to pick up the spot and someone from another team is standing on it you lose your chance. For a fun option assign each color a monetary value based on it's difficulty. For example the blues that are close to the basket are worth a penny, the greens which are further back are a nickel, etc. Play until all of the $$ is gone and the team with the most wins. Set them back up and try again. See diagram.

Joey Basketball/ In the House (A great culminating activity for grades 3-6)- The class is divided into teams of 2. Each of the baskets have a 10 foot crease around them (see the diagram) called the Joey line. Two teams go to each hoop and play a 2 on 2 game to one point. If you win you stay and if you lose you go to the end of the line and wait to play again.
Special rules
  • No defense outside the joey line
  • "visiting" team gets the ball to start
  • basketball rules as you know them, meaning if you know what travelling is don't travel, if you don't know what it is don't worry about it.
  • If you win three in a row then you leave to the line and the team you beat gets to stay in.
