Jump Rope

Wolverine PE

The goal of our jump rope unit is to find something for each child. Jumping rope is an outstanding way to exercise and by introducing games/skills and tricks we hope to engage everyone.

Primary Games  - Most of these have nothing to do with jumping rope, designed to remove the anxiety of "jumping" for some kids. This way whenwe get to it it is just another trick with the rope.
  • letters  - making letters with the rope on the floor. Ranging from "making the first letter in your name" to what letter makes the "uh" sound. Teachers love this one
  • numbers  - making numbers with the rope on the floor. "What is 3+1?" If Mr. Wilson had 10 cookies and ate 1/2 how many would he have left over?", etc.
  • shapes  - Can you make a triangle?, A square? A wiggly line, etc.
  • movement  - After everyone has made a circle on the floor, let's see howmany circles you can touch with your left hand in 30 sec., with your right knee, with your bottom. How many times can you jump in and out of it?Lay the ropes straight, run to a rope and ski jump from one end to another. Broad jump move the handle to where you landed and try to break the record.
  • basic jump - short rope

Tricks

  • cards - short rope  - These are cards we got from Jump Rope for Heart. They are quite simply "task cards", they have skills and pictures of someone doing the skills. These have been color coded for difficulty.
  • long rope - We start this by showing a few ways to get into the turning rope. Cartwheel into a turning rope, going under the legs of the turners, push ups over the turning rope, trading places when another jumper is in with you, jumping a short rope inside of a long rope, etc. This generally sparks some tricks from the kids, great opportunity for creativity.

Figure 8 -

Class lines up according to the diagram. Two turners (can be you and a student) turn the long rope. The line goes one at a time through the rope diagonally (front door) on every turn of the rope. As they go through they go around the other turner, when the last student goes, the first student starts again on the next turn of the rope from the other side.

  • If they miss a turn of the rope they start the count over
  • If someone gets hit with the rope, and interrupts the turning the counting stops
